The THRIVE Approach
More than sleep. A holistic approach to understanding your little one.
At Thrive Sleep Consulting, I believe better sleep starts with understanding your little one and looking at sleep holistically. That’s why our own unique, evidence-informed frameworks for babies and toddlers were created.
Our Baby P.E.A.C.E. Framework™ and Toddler T.H.R.I.V.E. Framework™ form the foundations of everything we do here at Thrive.
They bring together sleep science, nutrition, temperament, connection, environment, behaviour and responsive settling to create personalised support that considers your individual little one, your unique family and the stage you’re in.
Our Baby P.E.A.C.E. Framework™
The Baby P.E.A.C.E. Framework™ is designed to support babies as their sleep develops and changes throughout the first year and beyond.
It brings together five interconnected foundations that influence your baby’s ability to settle, stay asleep and get the restorative sleep they need.
P — (Sleep) Pressure
Getting the balance right is everything.
Sleep pressure is your baby’s natural biological drive to sleep. Too much can lead to overtiredness, while too little can make settling difficult.
We look at:
-
Age-appropriate sleep rhythms and structure
-
Day sleep and sleep distribution
-
Your baby’s individual sleep needs
-
Creating the right balance of sleep pressure throughout the day
The goal isn’t to make your baby fit a schedule, it’s to understand their individual sleep needs and create the conditions for better sleep.
E — Environment
Creating optimal conditions for sleep to happen.
Your baby’s sleep environment can influence how easily they settle and how well they stay asleep.
We consider:
-
Light and darkness
-
Temperature and comfort
-
White noise and other sensory factors
-
Consistent and calming sleep cues
-
Creating a safe, supportive sleep space
A — Associations
How your baby falls asleep can shape how they return to sleep.
Sleep associations are the cues and conditions your baby connects with falling asleep.
Together, we explore:
-
Your baby’s current settling patterns
-
Which associations are helping or creating challenges
-
How to introduce supportive sleep associations
-
Gentle, responsive ways to build greater independence with sleep
C — Calories & Nutrition
Sleep and nutrition work together.
Adequate daytime intake is an important part of supporting healthy sleep, particularly as babies grow and their nutritional needs change.
We consider:
-
Breast or formula feeding
-
Daytime milk intake
-
Age-appropriate solids
-
Feeding patterns throughout the day
-
How nutrition and sleep interact
E — Establish
This is where we bring everything together with a plan that works for your family.
Once we understand your baby’s needs, we create a personalised approach to settling and sleep.
This includes:
-
Responsive settling strategies
-
Practical ways to respond to your baby
-
Clear and achievable steps
-
A plan that reflects your parenting values
-
Support as you implement and adjust your approach
Our Toddler T.H.R.I.V.E. Framework™
Toddlers can be wonderfully complex, their sleep is influenced not only by sleep pressure, environment and associations but also by temperament, connection, nutrition, development, boundaries, behaviour, expectations and their growing need for autonomy.
That’s why toddler sleep requires a different lens.
The T.H.R.I.V.E. Toddler Framework™ brings all of these pieces together to help you understand what is really happening underneath the sleep struggle and how we can support your little one.
T — Toddler Understanding
Understanding your little one before changing their sleep.
Every toddler brings their own personality, temperament, sensitivities and needs for connection.
We explore:
-
Your toddler’s individual temperament
-
Their developmental stage
-
Connection and attachment
-
Separation and emotional needs
-
How they communicate and respond to change
-
What may be driving resistance around sleep
Because behaviour is communication and understanding what sits underneath it changes how we respond.
H — Healthy Nutrition
A well supported toddler needs the right foundations.
Nutrition can influence energy, regulation, appetite and sleep.
We consider:
-
Daytime food intake
-
Calorie needs
-
Milk and feeds
-
Meal and snack timing
-
Appetite and grazing
-
How nutrition may be interacting with sleep
We look beyond simply asking, “Why are they waking?” and consider whether they are adequately fuelled across the day.
R — Rhythms
Work with your toddler’s biology and not against it.
Toddlers need the right balance of sleep pressure and opportunity for sleep.
We consider:
-
Nap needs and transitions
-
Awake time and sleep drive
-
Bedtime timing
-
Circadian rhythm
-
The sleep environment
-
Wind-down routines
-
Consistent sleep cues
The aim is to create a rhythm that supports your toddler’s biological need for sleep while fitting realistically into family life.
I — Intervention Toolkit
Giving toddlers the tools to understand what you are asking of them and feeling encouraged to make changes and a part of the process.
Our toolkit may include:
-
Visual support
-
Interactive tools
-
Sleep props
-
Age-appropriate incentives
-
Sleep cues
These tools help turn the idea of bedtime and “staying in bed” into something your toddler can actually see, understand and participate in.
V — Values
Connection and boundaries can exist together.
Toddlers need both emotional connection and clear, consistent boundaries.
We help you understand:
-
What boundaries are needed around sleep
-
How to communicate expectations clearly
-
How to respond to common toddler behaviours
-
How to stay calm and consistent
-
How to hold boundaries while remaining responsive and connected
There is no need to choose between being gentle and having boundaries.
You can be warm, responsive and firm at the same time.
E — Establish & Implement
Knowing what to do is one thing, knowing how to implement it is another.
Once we understand your toddler and the factors influencing their sleep, we bring everything together into a clear, personalised plan.
We establish:
-
Your overnight response plan
-
A settling approach suited to your toddler
-
Clear expectations and boundaries
-
What you will do when challenges arise
-
How to respond consistently
-
How to adjust the plan as your toddler responds
Two Frameworks. One Holistic Approach.
If you’re exhausted, overwhelmed or simply unsure what your little one needs next, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Whether you have a baby who is struggling to settle or a toddler who suddenly seems to have very strong opinions about bedtime, Thrive can help you understand what’s happening and create a clear path forward.
Book a consultation and let’s help your family thrive — not just sleep.
